Tech Yourself — e-Books on Your iPhone

Said | Jun 07 2012

Ever see an offer for a free ebook and wish you had a Kindle?

You don’t need a shiny, happy e-reader to be the proud owner of an ebook. Don’t be silly.

Some of us don’t take direction well, do we?

At least don’t be silly about e-books. Read them on your….wait for it…

iPhone.

Kindle

The grandaddy of them all. Download and read your ebook on your iPhone. Simple. Straightforward. To the point. Never be bored in the doctor’s office again.

Nook

Barnes and Noble wants you to set up an account–and enter a credit card number before you download a free book?  Um, no.

Kobo

Open the app and you are confronted with free books and samples of books. Yesh.

iBooks

Has a Browse feature with Top Paid and Top Free ebooks. Which suits our nefarious purposes  quite well. *temples fingers, Mr. Burns style*

Other book apps that are loads of fun:

Streetmuseum: Dickens’ Dark London

Written as a companion to the exhibition in London, there’s a graphic novel attached. The first chapter is free.

Manga Rock 2–Best way to read manga

Nothing like a little hubris. But it might be justified. Free Manga! From MangaReader, MangaFox and MangaEden.       Over 10,000 to choose from.

I much prefer a retro, pages-and-ink book, but if you’re stuck somewhere with nothing to read, your iPhone can supply you with a great substitute. Maybe even for free.

I need to get the Kindle app. My husband bought me a Kindle, but he’s been using it for the last six months. :)

  2. HA. I mean, that is one, sad story.

  3. Kelly says:

I have a hand me down first generation Kindle that made me feel like a Luddite trying to download documents to it. I also have Kobo on my phone but I have to say, reading an entire book on such a tiny screen isn’t easy on the eyes.
Are these same apps available for iPad? I want an iPad.
